For years, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s children have grown up under the spotlight while trying to create identities separate from their famous parents.
Now, a quiet legal move made by their youngest biological daughter has drawn renewed attention — especially because of the exact day she chose to make the decision.
Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt reportedly filed paperwork to remove “Pitt” from her legal name on the very day she turned 18, marking the beginning of adulthood with a deeply personal choice.
The move makes Vivienne the latest of the former couple’s children to seek a legal identity without the Pitt surname. Her siblings Zahara and Maddox have also taken steps toward changing their names, while Shiloh’s request was officially approved in 2024.
Before their family life changed dramatically, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were often seen as one of Hollywood’s most famous couples. Their children grew up traveling the world and attending major events alongside them.
Zahara and Maddox Move Forward With Their Own Requests
The latest developments came after court documents revealed that Zahara Marley Jolie and Maddox Chivan Jolie had completed an important legal requirement in California.
Both siblings published legal notices announcing their requests to remove “Pitt” from their surnames.
Zahara, 21, requested the name Zahara Marley Jolie, while Maddox, 24, requested Maddox Chivan Jolie.
The publication requirement is a standard step in California name-change cases. Before a judge can approve a request, applicants must publicly announce the petition through an approved newspaper.
Neither request has been finalized yet. Both cases still require court hearings before a judge makes a final decision.
Maddox’s hearing is scheduled for September 14, while Zahara’s is scheduled for September 28.
Both children were adopted by Angelina before Brad later adopted them as well. Maddox was born in Cambodia and joined Angelina’s family in 2002. Zahara was born in Ethiopia and was adopted by Angelina in 2005.
Vivienne’s Decision Came on a Significant Day
Vivienne’s filing stood out because of the timing.
According to court documents, she submitted her request in Los Angeles County Superior Court on the same day she turned 18.
The petition asks for her legal name to change from Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt to Vivienne Marcheline Jolie.
The reason listed in the paperwork was simply “personal.”
No additional explanation was provided publicly, leaving the meaning behind the decision known only to Vivienne.
A hearing on her request is scheduled for November 2.
Although this is the first official legal step, it was not the first sign that Vivienne had begun using the Jolie name publicly.
The Broadway Credit That Sparked Questions
In 2024, Vivienne appeared in the Playbill credits for Broadway’s “The Outsiders” using the name “Vivienne Jolie.”
She worked on the production alongside Angelina Jolie, who served as a producer, while Vivienne was credited as a producer’s assistant.
At the time, the credit did not legally change her name.
However, her later court filing suggested that the choice may have reflected a personal decision that had already been developing.
Vivienne was born in July 2008 alongside her twin brother Knox. The twins are the youngest of Angelina and Brad’s six children.
Shiloh Made a Similar Choice After Turning 18
Vivienne’s decision follows a similar path taken by her older sister Shiloh.
Shortly after turning 18 in 2024, Shiloh filed a request to remove “Pitt” from her legal name.
Her request was later approved, officially making her Shiloh Nouvel Jolie.
A source close to Brad Pitt previously criticized the name changes, telling People that it was painful to see the children distancing themselves from their father publicly.
However, none of the children have publicly explained all of their personal reasons behind their individual decisions.
Angelina Jolie Once Spoke About Letting Her Children Become Themselves
Over the years, Angelina has spoken about raising six children with different personalities and interests.
“I have six very individual human beings in my home,” she previously told People.
She explained that parenting meant allowing children to discover who they were rather than forcing them into expectations created by others.
Those comments have gained renewed attention as her children enter adulthood and begin making decisions independently.
Years of Family Tension Have Followed the Divorce
The name changes come after years of public attention surrounding Angelina and Brad’s separation.
Jolie filed for divorce in 2016 after two years of marriage and more than a decade together. Their divorce was finalized in late 2024 after a lengthy legal process.
The former couple’s relationship and custody disputes have remained a subject of public discussion for years.
Online Reactions Flood Social Media
After news of Vivienne’s filing emerged, many people online shared their thoughts about the siblings making similar choices.
Some commenters focused on the bond between the children and the support they may provide each other.
One person wrote that it was meaningful to see the siblings standing together during such personal decisions.
Others questioned whether Brad Pitt would respond publicly, noting that he previously commented after Shiloh’s name change.
However, Vivienne has not publicly accused her father of wrongdoing, nor has she explained what “personal” refers to in her court filing.
For now, the reasons behind her decision remain private.
Still, the timing of the filing made the moment stand out.
On the first day she was legally able to make that choice entirely for herself, Vivienne asked the court to recognize the name she wants to carry into adulthood:
Vivienne Marcheline Jolie.
